Thoughts on the Revis Trade

After reading opinions and thoughts on the Darrelle Revis trade the past few days, I’ve decided to throw (up) out my two cents. But first, here’s my favorite slice of opinion from one of the contributors at thejetsblog.com.

As mesmerizing as Revis was on the field, he was painful to deal with off of it. He whined. His agents whined. And they did it all through a 50 megawatt smile and with the help of a few select local scribes. How many holdouts is enough for a player of Revis’ status? Hard to know, but I’ll tell you what – I’m not paying that guy 16 million this year just for him to want 20 million in two years and miss all of training camp to make sure he gets it.

darrelle-revis-cartedThere’s this idea that Revis was a leader in the locker room, which I’ve heard countless times on ESPN the last few days. I beg to differ. Revis is (was) a distraction. He was with the Jets for 5 years. During 3 of those years he either held out of training camp (twice) or threatened to hold out of camp (once). And this obviously brought out the press to discuss the matter ad nauseam. I had had enough a couple of years ago when he was the talk of the town during the HBO show Hard Knocks for holding out of camp. During these years he’s voiced his displeasure with Jets management / ownership in public or through his agents, yet was given a pass by most of us (including me) due to his unique talents. Now that he’s signed on with Tampa Bay he’s still whining about how the Jets lied or didn’t treat him right. You know what, I’d love to be in a position of being paid millions of dollars then turning around claiming I wasn’t treated right. Boo hoo!

Well, Mr. Darrelle Revis, I give to you the online equivalent of a backhanded slap in the face… I’m going to unfollow you on Twitter!

Pro Football Hall of Fame

Last Saturday, October 16th, a coworker and I visited the Pro Football Hall of Fame (Canton, OH) and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (Cleveland, OH). This post will be limited to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. I’ll post some information and pictures from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame later.

We found out earlier in the week that there were going to be a lot of kids at the Hall of Fame due to a Halloween party there, but it turned out to be good. Staff were stationed in various areas of the Hall with little goodies and candies. The Hall was split into sections for different subjects, as expected. Areas included the early years, hall of fame gallery/player busts, super bowls, and memorabilia and records. The memorabilia and records section had separate sections for all time records and rookies records, among other subjects I can’t remember.

Of all the things I got to see, I particularly liked an article from 1926 detailing the New York Yankees beating the Boston Bulldogs 24-0. Apparently the hate-hate relationship between NY and Boston went beyond baseball as far back as the 1920′s. I also took a panoramic picture of the hall of fame player busts using my new camera, which is included in the photo gallery below. It’s a fun little tool to have in a camera. I also created a super bowl ring for the XLVIII for the NY Jets. Overall it was an ejoyable outing that lasted just under 3 hours. And I can now check this off my (nonexistent) bucket list.

Jets @ Steelers Final

It’s been a few days now since the Jets lost to the Steelers in the AFC Championship game. Although they lost by less than a touchdown, it was an uphill battle right from the start as the Steelers took 9 minutes off the clock on the first drive of the game, which resulted in a touchdown. As tough as it was to watch the Jets lose, it was still an exciting season. There are some fans that will probably complain about this player or that coach, but I’m not one of them. Maybe because I don’t live in NY anymore and don’t have to listen to everybody talk about it at the water cooler, but I like to think I have a good amount of perspective when it comes to the teams I root for. Anyway, there was one pretty funny moment in the game, which I didn’t catch at the time. It was brought to my attention a few days ago while reading some articles online. Check out the video, the person recording the video will point you in the right direction.

That’s just too funny!

On a side note, this seems to be a new phenomenon lately, people taking out their video camera and recording the game to catch an interesting/funny moment on the TV and then uploading it to YouTube. I guess if you can’t upload video from your DVR, this is the next best option.

Kodak Zi8 and The Flutie Brothers

Lost in the shuffle of taking all those pics at Doral and the Pro Bowl is my disappointment with the Kodak ZI8. As a handheld HD video camera, it does what I ask. As you can see in the video below, it’s pretty clean and easy to watch… and definitely easy to carry around. The video is from the NFL Tailgate before the Pro Bowl. The band is called The Flutie Brothers and, if you look at the person playing the drums, you might notice someone by the name of Doug Flutie.

My disappointment with the Zi8 is the pictures. Only about 1/3 of the pics I took were clean enough to keep and upload. Part of it is the fact that there’s no flash, so night pics aren’t going to be clean. Then, when you press the button on the back to take a pic, it’s shakes, causing some blurred pics. I refuse to blame my own shaky hands for the blurry pictures :-) . So, on rare occasions I’ll be able to take just the Zi8 with me, but will mostly likely be forced to make a decision when heading out if I wan to take my point and shoot camera, the video camera, or both.

btw – this is my first video upload on YouTube and, hopefully, not my last.

2010-01 – Pro Bowl / Doral, Florida

Pictures from my weekend in Miami, Florida where I golfed at Doral and went to the Pro Bowl. Click here for my recant of the trip.

Weekend in Miami

Just before tee time (approximately 7:45 AM) on Sunday I had the following conversation:

Me:  Hey, how’s it going?  I’m Denny.

Mike:  I’m Mike, nice to meet you.

Me:  Are you going to be our fourth?  (we only had three players in our group)

Mike:  No, I’m your caddie.

Me:  Oh, uh, ok.

Now, this wasn’t the usual caddie we all think of carrying my bad throughout the course.  This caddie walked the course while we drove, he gave us pointers at each tee box, went out into the fairway before we teed off to find our golf balls after driving it out there, he would tell us our yardage to the center of the green and pin, then give us an idea where to putt when on the green.  A luxury indeed, and a first for me.  Yes, as discussed in the previous posts comment section, I did shoot a 96.  I attribute this to a couple of reason. First, we played from the blue tees, not the gold, or professional (which weren’t even marked).  Second, the caddie found all of my drives, something that doesn’t always happen when I golf.  And finally, the greens were soft. When I hit the green with my approach, it usually stayed on the green.  Actually, on the 14th hole, after a short drive, I took out my 3 wood from the fairway and, with the usual fade, landed the ball on the green. That’s unusual for me with any club, but with a 3 wood is downright impossible without the soft greens.  And, although I didn’t par the hole due to some horrible putting throughout the day, I was able to get on the par 4 18th green in 2 shots. This actually means something as it’s considered the hardest final hole on the PGA tour (I’d really like to leave out the part about there being no wind that day, but I can’t).

After a quick nap which was sorely needed, I made my way over to Joe Robbie Stadium – who are we kidding, that’s what it will always be known as – for the Pro Bowl Tailgate party and the Pro Bowl itself. During pre-game the loudest boos were for the Cowboys players, which was a little surprising.  I do have some video from the Tailgate – The Flutie Brothers, featuring Doug Flutie at drums – and Pro Bowl introductions.  I’ll try to figure out how to get them on YouTube and link to them here.  Until then, enjoy the pics here.

And thank you Mary for the great weekend!

Doral Golf Resort & Spa

[singlepic id=582 w=320 h=240 float=right]It’s times like these that remind me how spoiled I am… and still I see nothing wrong with being spoiled.  Tonight we’re going to Red, a steakhouse in South Beach, Miami Beach, Florida.  But, that’s not the highlight.  Tomorrow morning, at 7:45 (weather permitting), I’ll be teeing off from the Blue Monster course at Dural Golf Resort & Spa.  I have no illusions of shooting under a 100 at this course.  And, although the outing is free courtesy of MT, it’s already cost me over $100 for a spanking new golf shirt and shorts.  Can’t wait, and wish me luck.

26!

This is the type of post I think about writing almost every day, but never wind up getting it posted because time just doesn’t seem to be aplenty these days.  What type of post am I talking about?  The type that results from something I heard during the day and just thought it was so off the wall it would be good to write about.  Well, here I am in an Indiana hotel just north of Louisville with little to do but work, watch TV, and surf the net.  So here goes…

Earlier today a co-worker brought up this ridiculous stat that 20 some odd MLB baseball players have a college degree.  At first I thought he was exaggerating, maybe he meant 20% or 20 per team.  So, I did as I always seem to do lately, I got on my iPhone and Googled it.  Wow!  26!  That’s it.  But it’s actually worse than that.  That total includes managers in MLB.  No kidding, check out this Wall Street Journal article here.  That’s just sad.  There’s a part of me that understands, there are a lot of players that come out of the Dominican Republic at a very young age.  But 26!  Ugh.  What can I say?!

On another note, I was just watching/listening to ESPN E:60 and they had a piece on Chris Cooley.  Some may know him as a player on the Redskins, but most of you know him as the starting TE on the Konmen.  Well, he apparently has this website that gets 20k hits per day where he does all sorts of goofy stuff.  Goofy wins in my book, even if the Redskins can’t.  Anyway, I figured I’d check it out sometime and link to it here.  Pretty cool for a guy that doesn’t get a lot of press or make a name for himself by yelling “me, me, me” like a lot of the receivers in the NFL.

Still basking in the glow…

of the Jets win today. So much so that I added a new poll system on the blog for my readers just so I could ask this question. Go ahead, have at it. I’m guessing they’ll win 10 games this season, but if they win again next week, I might have to adjust. I’m allowed, it’s my poll. :-) And while you’re at it, add a comment with your thoughts.
