Goals 2011 – June Update

If Joker thought I was trending in the wrong direction after my April update, he’s going to get a kick out of this June update. Add to that I’m up for my mid-year assessment. My last assessment was Yellow following the March update. Amazingly enough I’ve actually worked out more than I’ve posted to the blog during the past 2 months (17 workouts to 12 posts).

At this point in the year I’m going to take a step back from the total exercise goal and try to concentrate more on the smaller goals of playing golf, riding my bike, and hiking. At a minimum I can at least reach those goals. Of note, I did pick up one hike during the month of June while at the Grand Canyon, bringing me almost half way to meeting that goal. The golfing goal definitely has to pick up. Luckily I have an outing scheduling for July 19th, one week from today at the City of San Clemente Municipal Golf Course. That doesn’t mean I won’t continue to work out, it just won’t be a priority. And I will still track the workouts as it might help me make more realistic goals next year.

Goals 2011 – April Update

Well, at least I improved during the month of April compared to March, by 1 whole workout. The final 3 workouts occurred during the last week of the Month. I travelled out of state for 14 days during the month, 3 of those days were for a personal vacation in Las Vegas, making it tough to fit in workouts (again!). On a good note, I finished my first hike on Saturday and, other than shin splints causing problems at the start, the hike was a success. No knee problems to report. :-) I’ll post some pictures from the hike in a few days. Going into May, I’m expecting another tough month, when I’ll be traveling for about 15 days, but am hoping things don’t get out of hand and I’m able to make up some workouts during the summer months.

Goals 2011 – March Update

Greetings from Nashville, Tennessee. I was greeted to Nashville yesterday with a tornado touching down in the area. The month of march was a tough month for trying to get in better physical shape. You could say the month was like a tornado considering how difficult it was to get into any sort of rhythm. Here’s a quick look at where I spent the month of March:

  • 16 days in Indiana.
  • 7 days in Colorado, 2 of those days were for fun.
  • 8 days in California sleeping in my own bed.
    • That’s a total of 23 days on the road during the month. Add to that I was on the road for 5 of the last 7 days in February and will be on the road for 10 of the first 11 days in April, 3 of which will be spent in Vegas for a quick family vacation. That’s a total of 38 days on the road over a 49 day period. My quick math tells me that’s over 75% travel (both personal and business). I get tired just thinking about it. Other than a few days at the gym during the first few days of March and a golf outing in Denver towards the end, there wasn’t much exercise involved, just 4 days total. Here’s hoping I can get back into the swing of things by the middle of this month.

      January 2011 Update | February 2011 Update

      Goals 2011 – February Update

Greetings from Indianapolis, Indiana. When I first started thinking of a workout goal for 2011, the tough part about picking a number was having to deal with periods when I would be travelling, which accounted for 13 weeks during 2010. If you’ve ever travelled for business you probably know exercising can be a tough task, especially if there are other co-workers with you or if you have to deal with clients after hours. The last week of February was just the case. Those 3 days in Vegas were spent at a conference during the day and networking afterwards. The networking part always included an alcoholic beverage in hand and lasted until past 7 PM. Although some may be able to exercise while under the influence, I’m not one of them. If anything, it just makes me more tired. On the other end of the spectrum was this first week in Indianapolis, where I’m working at a client on my own (read: no co-workers) and have no after work obligations. I arrived late Sunday night and exercised Monday, Wednesday, and Friday this week. Although, now we’re getting into March, which I’ll leave for the next update. The stats for February were worse than January and I’m falling behind quickly. Where I exercised 10 times in January, I managed only 8 during February… a shorter month, which doesn’t make me feel much better. I’m now required to exercise just over 13 times per month to reach my goal. Anyone taking bets?

      January 2011 Update

      Goals 2011 – January Update

Earlier today I was called a slacker for not posting to the blog since the Super Bowl. And here I’m thinking it’s been a lot longer than that! What can I say, last week was pretty hectic at the office so the blog took a back seat. Anyway, as promised last month when I posted my goals for 2011, here’s my first update, which includes exercise days through January 31, 2011. As you can see, other than moving the MED 10 days further, I’ve lost days in the weekly and monthly averages. February hasn’t gotten off to a great start either and, with travel starting the last week of the month, the goals might quickly get away from me. There is one positive. My workouts have gotten back to a respectable level, with cardio workouts lasting 35-40 minutes followed by 20-30 minutes of lifting… including ab workouts, which are sorely needed.

      Happy New Year & 150

      Happy New Year!

2010 was a fun and exciting year, my travels took me to places I’ve already been and a couple of new ones.  Phoenix (January), Indianapolis (March), Las Vegas (July) and San Diego/La Jolla (October) were a few places I got to visit again.  Miami (January), Palm Springs (July), Birmingham (April/May) and Minneapolis (November/December) were a few places I got to visit for the first time.  I even attended/participated in some exciting events, the NFL Pro Bowl and golfing at Doral in Miami, the San Diego Zoo and Chargers in San Diego, and the Knicks in Minnesota.  You can read about these trips by clicking on the Travel category to the right.

At the beginning of the year I made 5 “resolutions” for 2010, of which I actually achieved 1. Yeah, just 1. That’s a .200 batting average, below or at the infamous Mendoza Line depending on which reference you want to use.  This year, I’m not going to make any resolutions.  No, I’m calling them goals. I know, semantics.  Since I’m not a big fan of resolutions that state “I want to get in shape” or “I want to lose weight” my goals are going to have specific numbers attached to them too.  And I’m going to track them here on the blog so everyone can see me reach these goals or watch me stick my tail between my legs.

So what are my goals. Well, there’s 1 overriding goal for the year, that is to exercise 150 days during 2011, which comes out to just under 3 days per week. Back in the day – a whole 3 years ago – getting 150 days of exercise was a piece of cake as i was probably closer to 250. But my work schedule and travel makes exercising hard now and I have to start somewhere. There’s no reason to make a goal that can’t reasonably be reached based on more recent history. It would be a stretch to say I exercised 75 days this past year, but I didn’t track them to be able to give you a specific number.

Now, this goal has sub-goals too. Of the 150 days, I don’t want them to be strictly limited to going to the gym.  So I’m going to golf 8 times, go on 5 destination bike rides, and go for 5 hikes.  The reason for specifying “destination” bike rides is to make sure I get out of Venice Beach on occasion.  The bike rides I take from Venice Beach to Temescal Canyon will count towards the exercise goals, but not towards the destination bike rides.

I’m also adding 1 non-excercise related goal for the year, that is to visit 1 new place during 2011.  This doesn’t have to be a far place requiring a flight. For example, right now I’m hoping to visit Yosemite National Park.  I can probably get a bike ride and hike included on that trip, which will help meet my exercise goals.  That’s it for now.  Hope you all have a happy, healthy, and exciting 2011.

      Fantasy Football Week 14/15 Update

Turns out December is a bad time of year for my body. This time last year I had back issues which caused me to miss a day at the office. This time it was the common cold that caused me to miss a day and a half of work. It’s been a while since I was this sick, probably more than 3 years. If I remember correctly, I tend to get the long lasting nagging cold. The type of cold that doesn’t debilitate, but lasts for a few weeks. This one was brutal… and each day brought on a new stage of sickness. Tuesday brought the soar throat. Wednesday brought the runny nose. Thursday brought the cough. Friday brought on the fever along with remnants from the previous three days. I barely left my bed all day only getting up for food and drink. Today I’m feeling better, with a slight runny nose and cough, I’m just not sure how long this will last. Figured I’d get a quick fantasy football update while the energy level is there. Here goes:

      Pick ‘em:

      Week 14 Points – 108 (8th place)
      Total Points – 1116
      Overall Rank – 14th (52 points behind 1st)

Finally a positive week, but not much to show for it. The overall lead is out of reach, unless the 13 players in front of me decide to forget their picks this week, which isn’t likely to happen. Moving on.

Week 15 Upset Picks – Houston, New Orleans

      Fantasy Football:

      Playoffs – Round 1 – Loss 124-70 to DC4ND
      Rank – Out
      Week 15 Yahoo! Projected Score – 100-99 (vs. Ex-Aficio)

The injury bug hit the Konmen at the wrong time. Aaron Rogers left the game in the 2nd quarter with a concussion and less than a point. Christopher Ivory also left the game in the 2nd quarter with a hamstring injury and 4 points. Although both players would have needed monster games to make up the difference, their injuries knocked the Konmen out of the playoffs. There will be no repeat championship this year.

The next fantasy football update will be after the season is over and will include a full recap of the season from all three leagues. Until then, Happy Holidays!

      Fiesta Hermosa Beach Festival

What a spectacular day for a bike ride yesterday from Venice Beach to Hermosa Beach for the Fiesta Hermosa Beach Festival, taking in almost 30 miles of biking along the beach. Thanks to Vince and Kara for the great idea and a great afternoon. Sadly I didn’t take many pictures at the festival, other than this quick one of Vince bringing me my drink of choice. The SPF 50 sunscreen worked as it was supposed to allowing me to enjoy another beautiful day in the sun today, which includes a trip to Hollywood Park for some betting on the ponies and a party at my place… which actually starts before I get back from the park. Not sure how that happened. I’ll make sure to bring that elusive camera with me to the park this time.

      Pandora

When I go to the gym – which doesn’t happen as often as it should lately – I typically listen to 2 types of music, something with a fast beat for cardio, then rock for lifting. My selection of beats has become somewhat old and worn out lately, so I’ve been needing something new. Hellooooo Pandora! Today, for the first time, I used it at the gym using my iPhone. I’ve known about Pandora for many years now, but I’m really starting to use it a lot lately. There’s almost no need for songs on my computer, phone, or iPad with Pandora available from pretty much anywhere.
