Mask (Guest Blog)

Joker36 surprised me with a guest blog last week. It’s taken a few days to get it up, but better late than never. Thanks for the stories Joker.

The scene: K and a few of his co-workers sitting around a table, having dinner in Omaha. We were talking about movies that we enjoyed.

One guy says that he really enjoyed the movie “Mask” and he proceeded to tell us how it really moved him how the man faced his deformity through his life and how his Mom (Cher) struggled with the adversity that she faced raising him. And then he said how sad he was at the end… and just overall what a touching movie it was and how it really made him think.

Then it got silent for a moment, and K proceeds to say, “Well I didn’t get that at all from that movie. First of all, the guy wasn’t really deformed, it was really a mask that when he put it on, it turned his face green and made him dance to Cuban music and save people. Overall, I thought the movie was a riot and I think maybe you looked a little too deep into it…..”

Then it got silent for another moment, until we all had a good chuckle (unfortunately at K’s expense). Only you K can mix up the comparison of “Mask” and “The Mask”

First off all, I’d like to note that, unless Joker can provide physical evidence to the contrary, this conversation was paraphrased.  But chances are I did say something of the sort.  I’m still not sure about this “Mask” movie, maybe I should add it to my Netflix queue.

  1. Unfortunately, I have no concrete evidence other than my (pretty accurate) memory, but I assure you, the context of the conversation as written is more or less on target. Still makes me chuckle.

    • Yeah me too. I'm still trying to figure out what made the group dynamics so interesting those early FDC days. I haven't been able to replicate the good times, even from a work perspective, since.
